Adolescent and Youth Empowerment

At Bodmando, we recognize that young people—including children, adolescents, and young adults up to the age of 24face unique developmental challenges and opportunities. Their physical, emotional, cognitive, and social transitions require targeted, age-responsive, and inclusive interventions. Whether they are navigating education, seeking employment, or managing their health and identity, youth must be supported in ways that acknowledge both their vulnerabilities and their immense potential to lead transformative change in their communities.

Global and Regional Contexts on Youth Inclusion

  • Globally, young people make up over 40% of the world’s population, yet they remain disproportionately affected by poverty, unemployment, gender inequality, and lack of access to healthcare. Despite international commitments such as the UN’s Youth2030 Strategy, youth engagement in policy and development remains inconsistent and often tokenistic.
  • Africa has the youngest population in the world, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity. Many youth face intersecting barriers including poor education systems, lack of healthcare access, and high rates of orphanhood due to conflict and disease. Yet, African youth are also leading grassroots movements, digital innovation, and social entrepreneurship.
  • In South Africa, youth face challenges related to unemployment, gender-based violence, substance abuse, and limited opportunities for meaningful participation. Programs targeting youth often fail to consider the complex lived realities of orphaned children, adolescent mothers, and youth with disabilities. However, youth-led activism and innovation are increasingly shaping public discourse and driving social accountability.
  • In Europe, while youth are better represented in education and employment compared to other regions, marginalized youth—such as migrants and ethnic minorities—still face discrimination. Regional programs are now prioritizing youth empowerment and participation, particularly in green transitions and civic engagement.

Recommendations

  • Programs must be designed with and for youth, ensuring they reflect the lived realities of diverse young populations.
  • It is crucial to integrate youth-led partnerships and participatory methods into project design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Multi-sectoral collaborationlinking education, health, employment, and protection services should be prioritized to ensure holistic support.
  • Investing in youth capacity building is also key to fostering leadership, confidence, and resilience
